#purple N.A.Q. (Never Asked Questions)

Some IRC channels and Usenet groups have FAQ's, lists of frequently asked questions.

We don't really have any FAQ's in #purple, except "what is this channel about?" (Nothing), so instead we have a NAQ. This is a list of questions which have never been asked in #purple. If you have any questions you would like answering, then please do not ask them in the channel, instead mail them to jaybyrd@shaw.ca and they can be answered here.

  1. How can you calculate the square root of a number?

A good method is to repeatedly divide the number, and average the result with the divisor. Eg, to calculate the square root of 6, this could be the calculation:

    6 / 2 = 3; (2 + 3)/2 = 2.5
    6/2.5 = 2.2222 (2.5+2.2222)/2 = 2.3611
    6/2.3611 = 2.5411 (2.5411+2.3611)/2 = 2.4511
    6/2.4511 = 2.4478 (2.4478+2.4511)/2 = 2.4494
    6/2.4494 = 2.4494

So we know the square root of 6 is 2.449 to 3 digits.
